ADMINISTRATION

Jim Hopson
President and Chief
Executive Officer

Jim Hopson came on board in 2005 as the Roughriders’ first Chief Executive Officer and over the past four years, fans have seen many changes on and off the field. The changes and a focus on excellence in all areas of the operation culminated in the team claiming the 2007 Grey Cup championship. A new level of expectations has been set and Hopson is focused on building long term stability with championship level football and strong business acumen.

There has been a renewed focus on community involvement by the club and a significant number of players are now working in and making Regina their year round home and being very involved in the community. Hopson leads by example as he spends numerous hours in the provincial community speaking to community groups, at charity events, and presenting to business groups.

Off the field, the Riders are continuing to excel as a business as the team continues to attain record profits. Over the past few years, the organization has won Paragon Awards for both marketing and community involvement. These have all been steps in achieving the level of excellence Hopson desires for the organization.

The focus on evolving the business side of the organization has brought forth acknowledgement on a number of levels. In 2008, the Roughriders were named as one of Saskatchewan’s Top 100 Companies. Earlier this year Hopson was recognized by Saskatchewan Business Magazine as one of the province’s most influential men and most recently was inducted by Junior Achievement into their Business Hall of Fame.

Hopson’s role with the Roughriders includes overseeing all of the operations of the football club, and he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to that role. Prior to re-joining the Roughriders Hopson spent 30 years as a teacher, principal and Director of Education/CEO in Saskatchewan.

Hopson’s roots in Saskatchewan football run deep. He began his football career in high school with the Thom Collegiate Trojans. He then went on to play for the Regina Rams prior to joining the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 1973.

Hopson became a starter in 1974 and lined up at guard or tackle for each game during the season. Hopson played four seasons with Saskatchewan and helped open holes for the likes of legendary back George Reed, and in protecting quarterback great Ron Lancaster.

Hopson was able to combine teaching in Lumsden with playing professional football during the 1975 and 1976 seasons, but after playing in the 1976 Grey Cup he retired from football to concentrate on his career in education.

Hi Jim - I am glad the Riders are in the capable hands of a Thom Trojan. I watched the Grey Cup from my home in the Cayman Islands. A sad ending but the weather was great. Keep up the good work

I would like to second the motion set forth by Ken Duczek and his wife that an "I am the 13th man" t-shirt be put into production. I agree that it is a slogan that declares "all for one and one for all!" in a way befitting Rider Nation.
I would also like to thank the team for the year that was. What a ride!

Mr. Hopson is it possible that the Riders could start a Rider Nation Fan Club. Charge a certain amount of money to become a member, give out a lapel pin stating Rider Nation Fan Club member. This could produce revenue for the Rider organization. I am sure that Rider Fans across the country would join this club. Keep as many a possible of the free agents, you have a great core of athletes.

To Jim Hopson: Yesterday, we went to Mosaic Stadium for our H1N1 flu shot. We were thrilled to see all the photos of former Roughriders - some going way back. We were extremely disappointed, however, that our brother, Len Ortman, did not have his photo displayed along with others. Len played for several years in the late 40's and early 50's and was a home-grown Regina boy. The display should include ALL former players. Might we suggest, as well, that a small memoriam be displayed in honour of those Riders who perished in the plane crash in 1955.

My wife had mentioned to me the story of Calgary weatherman who called us the "loser city" before giving a weather update. While many others seem to be rapped up in the idea of the 13th man now being a negative. As my wife had said why not embrace it. We think the Rider store should sell t-shirts that proudly say "I'm the 13th Man", just like in the movie Spartacus when all of the Spatacus faithful shouted "No I'm Spartacus". As a team we stand, win or lose we walk together. We need to fight for our 13th man title not meekly bow down to anyone with an opinion. Thank you for playing an exciting style of football and acting like professionals. Loads of talent, tremendous honour and tons of heart. Talent can be replaced but honour and heart are hard to find and difficult to replace. Great season Green Machine!

George a Rider Fan forever
George From the far Northern Saskatchewan.
To Mr. Hopson and the entire Rider organization.
Thanks to the Riders for a fantastic three years. I have never seen a more positive team atmosphere as I have the last 3 years. We truly are the best team West or East and we have the fans to back it up. To the players and coaches you have nothing to hang your head about. You are truly the best and we are all human and everyone make mistakes. Thanks for the memories and as far as I am concern, you have "WON" the Grey Cup.

To Mr. Jim Hopson, the Roughrider administration, coaches, and players:

I am a high school football coach in Southey. In 2007, Mr. Hopson called our school on behalf of the Riders. He commended us for agreeing with our opposing coaches to let a boy with down's syndrome from Hudson Bay score a touchdown accompanied by our defense in a game late in our season. He wished us well in the playoffs as well, and as it turned out, we won a provincial championship that year. As I watched the grey cup this year, and even in my bitter disappointment at the end of the game, I realized that everything we as high school coaches try to instill in our young players has become a part of the Rider fabric over these past few years. The players and coaches represent more than football; they are strong community leaders, conducting themselves with pride and class. They embody all that is great about the game of football, because the game is helping them to become men of respect and honor. That doesn't happen very much in pro sports anymore. I am truly proud to be a member of 'RIDER NATION'. To me this team is a complete champion in every way, shape, and form. Congratulations, boys, and remember, you are Saskatchewan, because we can see you bleeding green and white all year long.
